Happy 4th! Hope you all had a good one and were able to take some time off and relax with family.
We were able to check out some of the fireworks steps away from our house. We knew NYC pretty well but not Battery Park City where we are living. And, honestly, we have fallen in love with it. It has that city feel with views of the river, the greenway steps away with amazing walking and biking, and every train you could need within blocks. It's an amazing place. We might have fallen into it but couldn't be living in a better area.
Pizza
I mean, it's NYC! How can we not eat pizza?! We took up a rainy Saturday walking around The Village and stopping at one of the best, Denino's. Originally opened as a tavern in Staten Island in 1937, Denino's has been serving up delicious thin crust pizza since 1951. While there are so many incredible options to choose from, including meatball and ricotta and the award-winning clam pizza, I'm a plain cheese girl. So, naturally, we went with the 1951 original which is sauce and mozz. This is pizza! Crispy crust with just the right amount of crunch and the perfect mix of cheese and sauce. You just can't go wrong. Eric and I ate an entire pizza by ourselves. It will be hard not to go here every day!
Springsteen on Broadway
Broadway is back baby! Bruce Springsteen was the first of the Broadway shows to return and it felt GOOD. Good to be out again, good to be in close proximity to people and not be stressed about it. It was a great feeling after over a year of craziness. And what better way to come back than with The Boss!
We, unfortunately, weren't allowed to take any pictures while the show was going on. The best I could do is the stage before the show (shown below). The show itself would probably be amazing for those of you who are die-hard Bruce Springsteen fans. He went into great detail about his life starting with his childhood and moving on through his adolescence and becoming famous. It was a mix between talk, poems, and songs. I think I was looking for a standard concert with him playing his most famous songs. This wasn't that, and, to be fair, nobody ever said it was. Overall, I think the show is best left for his most beloved fans. I will be looking forward to his next concert where I can rock out with him and a big crowd of dancing fans.
Statue of Liberty
Despite having grown up very close to NYC, Eric had never seen the Statue of Liberty. So between being the 4th of July and having access to Baby Liberty for a couple of days, we knew we needed to take the trip over. More on the Baby Liberty below!
First, do you know why the Statue of Liberty is green? Her skin is made of copper and when copper is exposed to oxygen in the air, it oxidizes and causes a fine crust or film to develop that is usually green. This layer protects the original metal underneath. In copper and bronze, this natural protective process is called patination. It took nearly 30 years for the Statue to turn from her original copper color to the green we see today.
What is Baby Liberty you ask? It is a 9-foot replica made by France that will sit in DC at the French ambassador's residence and made a short trip to NYC on its way (see left picture above). 135 years after the original Statue of Liberty was gifted to the United States, France is sending another one to reaffirm the shared values and friendship between the US and France. She sat on Ellis Island and you could see the Statue of Liberty in the background which was a nice touch.
Overall, a great trip to the island. Playing tourist for the day was fun and we even got to see the original torch which had been damaged beyond repair and was removed in 1984 (see right picture above). The boats over to the islands were pretty crowded though once you were over it wasn't too bad. Great way to spend the fourth.

Until Next Time.
